Here's Why There's No One-Size-Fits-All Checklist- And What Actually Works
There's nothing quite like turning on the faucet and getting nothing. No water for coffee, no water for a shower; or worse, all soaped up with no way to rinse, or no water for the animals.

What You Can Actually Check, No Matter Your Setup
Every well system in our area is set up a little differently, often depending on which company installed or last serviced it. That means a detailed step-by-step guide that works for everyone doesn't really exist. Giving you the wrong instructions for your specific setup would be worse than giving you none. But these three things are common problems we see across many systems, and safe to check yourself:
The breaker. Well pumps run on a dedicated breaker. Find it, and if it's tripped, reset it once. If it trips again right away, stop, don't keep flipping it. That's a sign of a real electrical problem, and repeatedly resetting it can make things worse or become a safety hazard.
The overload, on control boxes that have one. Some control box styles include a manual overload reset button. If yours has one and it's tripped, it can be reset the same way as a breaker, once. If it trips again, same rule applies: stop and call.
A low-pressure switch, if you have one installed. Some systems (not all) have a separate low-pressure cutoff switch designed to protect the pump from running dry. If yours has one and it's tripped, it typically needs to be manually reset.

Why "Back in Water" Isn't Always "Problem Solved"
Here are two real jobs from the last several months that show why we push so hard on full diagnosis instead of just swapping the obvious part.
The control box that kept failing. A customer had their control box replaced by another company about a year ago. It failed again, same symptoms, no water. Swapping the box a second time would have gotten them running again, and a lot of companies (or a confident DIYer) would have stopped right there. Instead, our testing found insulation breakdown down in the well itself; a slow electrical short that had almost certainly caused the original failure too. The box wasn't a bad box; it was a symptom. Because that underlying short was never found, this customer paid for a second control box and labor call they didn't need to — about $500 they could have avoided if the real cause had been caught the first time.
The pressure switch that wouldn't stay fixed. Another customer had gotten used to banging on the side of their pressure switch whenever they lost water, it would kick back on temporarily. The switch itself had already been replaced about a year prior by another company, and this was the third switch in four years. Every visit meant another switch and another labor charge. When we got out there, the actual problem wasn't the switch at all, it was an undersized pressure tank for the pump that had been installed. Manufacturers want to see at least a full minute of pump run time with no water being used; this system was getting about 20 seconds. That's short cycling, the same wear pattern you'd see from a waterlogged tank, except the tank itself wasn't bad, it was just the wrong size for the system. Every switch replacement was doomed to fail again until the actual mismatch was addressed.
In both cases the DIY-level fix, swap the part, was entirely possible; and it worked, temporarily. Neither person did anything wrong. But without proper testing, there was no way for them (or for the company that just swapped parts) to know the failure would repeat.
It's Not Always a Hidden Problem
This isn't us looking for a reason to turn a simple repair into a bigger project, that's not how we operate. Thorough diagnosis often turns up nothing dramatic at all. Sometimes the cause is something simple and within your control, like a kid who left a hydrant running- we find it, tell you, and it's yours to decide what to do with. Sometimes it's an external factor like a lightning strike or a hard freeze, something we can help you guard against but never fully eliminate out here. And sometimes it really is just time, every pump and component wears out eventually, no matter how well it's built or maintained. When that's the answer, we tell you that too. Either way, we test thoroughly enough to actually know what's true, rather than assuming whatever's easiest to say. That's what lets us be straight with you about what actually needs to happen next- no more, no less.
When to Call
- The breaker or overload trips a second time, even after resetting it once
- You smell anything burning near the panel or well house
- The pump runs constantly with little to no water output
- You've checked what applies to your setup above and you're still stuck
- You've already replaced a part yourself (or had someone else do it) and the same problem has come back
That last one matters as much as the others. A repeat failure is usually the clearest sign that the real cause hasn't been found yet.

Common Questions About Losing Well Water
Why did my well pump breaker trip?
A tripped breaker almost always means something caused a spike in amperage, this can be electrical (a wiring issue, a failing start component) or mechanical (a motor or pump under strain). It's safe to reset it once, but if it trips again, that's a sign of a real underlying problem rather than a one-time fluke.
Is it safe to reset a tripped well pump breaker myself?
Yes, resetting it once is safe and common. If it trips again right away or repeatedly, stop resetting it, continuing to flip it can worsen the underlying issue and, in some cases, create a safety hazard.
Why does my pressure switch keep failing?
Repeat pressure switch failures are usually a symptom, not the actual problem. Common underlying causes include a waterlogged or undersized pressure tank, electrical issues elsewhere in the system, or a switch that was never matched correctly to the setup. Replacing the switch alone often means it will fail again.
Can I fix a no-water well problem myself?
Some things are safe to check and reset yourself, like a tripped breaker, an overload switch, or a low-pressure cutoff switch. Beyond that, most well systems require testing equipment (amp draw, voltage, pressure under load) to accurately diagnose, since several different failures can produce identical symptoms. Can you fix it? Absolutely! Many above ground components are very easy to replace. It gets very difficult to know if you have actually solved your problem though without the proper test instruments and experience.
